Superintendent Search Committee

A search committee of Board of Education members has been formed to undertake the search for a new superintendent of the Long Hill Township School District. Karen Nyquest will serve as chair of the committee, and Ann Butler, Kim Case, and Marta Moakley will serve as selected members.

November 3rd, 2020
The Board has completed Round 2 interviews and has moved on to Round 3.

October 16th, 2020
The Round 2 interviews have been completed and are being evaluated. It is important to note that the input received from staff and parents surveys, listening sessions and board meetings has and will continue to be used. This information has provided the committee with valuable information which was used in formulating questions for every interview thus far and will be instrumental in developing the questions for the Round 3 interviews.

Week of September 7, 2020
All Round 1 interviews have been completed.  Round 2 will begin within the next 2-3 weeks.  Feedback from parents, teachers, and administrators will be used to formulate the questions for the Round 2 interviews.

August 27th, 2020 - Interviews
Applicant interviews for the superintendent position began this week and will continue next week.


Dr. Laura Morana, Ed.D., Selected as Long Hill School District’s Interim Superintendent

To provide the Long Hill School District a smooth transition and strong educational leadership as it manages its superintendent search, Dr. Laura Morana, Ed.D., has been selected to serve as Interim Superintendent, effective October 1.

Dr. Morana comes to Long Hill from a two-year term at the South Orange-Maplewood School District as its Interim Assistant Superintendent for Special Education and Nursing Services.  Prior to that she worked as Acting Chief Academic Officer for the New Jersey Department of Education and Interim Executive County Superintendent in both Mercer and Middlesex Counties.  Before retiring, Dr. Morana served as Superintendent in Red Bank and as a principal in Elizabeth.  In addition to holding certificates as Principal and School Administrator, she also holds teaching certificates in Elementary Education, Teacher of the Handicapped and English as a Second Language. 

Prior to her starting the interim position with Long Hill, Dr. Morana will consult with our district from September 1 to 30.

We are fortunate to have been able to engage Dr. Morana as our Interim Superintendent and welcome her guidance and expertise.

August 20th, 2020 - Interviews
The first round of interviews of candidates for our Superintendent position will begin next week.

August 12th, 2020 - Application Closed - Transition
The application for the superintendent position closed August 10.  33 applications have been received.  The review process is underway.
It is anticipated that there will be an interim Superintendent for our district effective October 1. The end of Dr. Acevedo's tenure with our district is August 31.  To provide a transition until October 1, Dr. Lori Jones will assume the role of Acting Superintendent from September 1 to September 30.
Concurrently, Ms. Melissa Backer will assume the position of Acting Principal of Gillette for that same period.

August 4th, 2020 - Application Deadline
The superintendent application is set to close on August 10.  As of now, there are 14 applicants.
The Search Committee is planning to hire an Interim Superintendent to provide a bridge between Dr. Acevedo's tenure at Long HIll and the start date of a new superintendent.

July 26th, 2020 - Transition Plans
The Superintendent Search committee is monitoring the on-line application site. As of July 24th, we have 12 respondents. The application is open until August 10.
In the meantime, the committee is developing a transition plan for the final days of Dr. Acevedo’s time with the district. The continuity needed for the reopening is tantamount in the committee’s undertakings.
The community survey results will be published on this site. The due date was July 24th and the responses from the 241 respondents will be formulated as soon as possible. If it can be facilitated, the open ended comments will also be published on the website. Many thanks to those who shared their ideas, thoughts, and feelings.

July 15th, 2020 - Update on Stakeholder Input
Through interviews and virtual meetings, the Search Committee learned the key experience, management style, and character traits which the staff and administration sees as most important in Long Hill’s next superintendent.
Thank you to staff members who joined one of the two online virtual meetings to help the committee in this important endeavor.
A community input survey will enable community members to share their feedback with the search committee. Notification of the survey will be sent through an eblast, announced in the Echo Sentinel, and shared with the BOE’s Township Committee liaison to announce at the upcoming town council meeting.

July 14th, 2020 - Superintendent Search
The teaching staff participated in two Zoom sessions with the Search Committee. The committee learned the key experience, management style and character traits which the staff sees as most important in the next superintendent.
A community input survey will be issued by July 16 with a due date of July 24. Notification of the survey will be through an eblast, newspaper article, and possibly a town-wide eblast. It will be available on this website.
The ad for the superintendent position will be made available on this website once is finalized. The deadline for applications is anticipated to be August 3.

July 5th, 2020 - Superintendent Search Committee
A committee of Board of Education members has been formed to undertake the search for a new superintendent of the Long Hill Township School District. Karen Nyquist will serve as chair of the committee and Ann Butler, Kim Case, and Marta Moakley will serve as the selected members.
In preparation for the search, input will be sought from the administration, staff, school community at large as well as other integral community stakeholders. A combination of surveys and forums will be used to solicit input on what is seen as the necessary experience and traits for a superintendent in our district. The goal is to find a person who will best match what the community sees as essential for the continued growth and development of students.
Two input sessions have been scheduled for the district staff. One on Wednesday, 7/8, at 7PM and one on Thursday, 7/9, at 10AM.
A survey is being prepared for parent input and will be sent shortly.
