To Parents, Staff, Students and Visitors,

“Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live, as well as strong to think.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

The middle school years are a critical time of change and exploration for young adults as they begin to understand this world in their own way.  Our students are at the formative stage of adulthood and are naturally curious about life, themselves, and how they will find their own place among our complex society.  They are beginning to make decisions that will define themselves, future, and their friendships.  Add to this process rigorous academic demand and we gain valuable insight into the complexity of the contemporary adolescent.

Often, friends and colleagues will remark to me their bewilderment on how youth grow up in the current world.  Radical changes in technology and communication have remade the expectations and conveniences of childhood and adolescents.  As I contemplate the changes that have taken place since my own entrance into the profession of public education fifteen years ago, it is clear that the facts of today’s lessons will have changed or will be obsolete within a short time.  The education that will be of value to our students is one that teaches them to engage the changing world with an active voice and make decisions that enhance their well being.  We must not only strengthen their minds, but their character, so that they have the internal compass to make their way.

Central Middle School welcomes each student and invites him or her to embrace the unique opportunities of adolescence and engage in our community of learning.  We set a clear, consistent vision for educating the children of Long Hill.  We believe that while working along with the home, we can guide our young people through these turbulent years and help them to emerge as mature, dynamic young adults.  We create opportunities to present students with a rigorous curriculum in a setting that utilizes active student learning.  Our dynamic staff creates a rich education that moves students beyond textbooks and equips them with the skills and practices of good character.  The challenging academic programs develop students’ skills for continued academic success while preparing them for the challenges of contemporary life.

I look forward to working with each of you in the days and months ahead.  Thank you for the warm and gracious welcome you have extended to me.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.
