Welcome to Gillette School's Media Center!
"What a school thinks about its library is a measure of what it thinks about education."
~ Harold Howe, former US Commissioner of Education
Mrs. Angela Petrilli, Media Specialist
Brief Bio: I am a certified School Library Media Specialist and Elementary Classroom Teacher, and have been an educator for 24 years. During my 9 years as the librarian at Gillette School and teacher in Long Hill, I have worked on various district committees. I am a member of the New Jersey Association of School Librarians, and presently, I am a member of the Board of Trustees at the Long Hill Township Public Library, serving as the School Superintendent’s Representative.
Our Media Center is a hub of activity!
Our Library collection has 7000 titles for students in Pre-K through Grade 1. There is a large selection of Teacher Resource materials and videos/DVDs available for classroom use.
Our computer station houses three computers for reference work and access to our library catalog. In addition there are laptop computers available for classroom enrichment projects. We are proud of our new LCD projector and large screen which is used for library instruction, staff presentations, and for continuing education courses for teachers.
We also host our annual Author Visit in the Media Center, along with programs from guest speakers in our community.
Read to Succeed!
Our annual Six Flags Six Hour Reading Program has finished, and participating students will receive their free tickets to 6 Flags Great Adventure in May.
Thank you, students and parents, for making this another great year for recreational reading!

Library Instruction
Library instruction is designed to promote literature appreciation and a life-long love of reading and learning. Our goal is to help students gain confidence in becoming independent users of the library.
Some of our topics we will cover this year include:
-
Famous authors in Children's Literature and their websites
-
Appropriate book care procedures
-
Library behavior expectations
-
An introduction to several fiction genres
-
An introduction to the nonfiction collection
-
The beginning fundamentals of library research
-
The importance of the Caldecott medal in Children's Literature

Library Policies
Students visit the Media Center on a weekly basis. Pre-K and Kindergarten students may check out one book, and First Grade students may check out two books. Students will not be able to take out any new books unless they have returned their previously borrowed books.
Students are responsible for all books that they borrow. If a book is lost or significantly damaged, the student will not be allowed to borrow addtional materials until payment for the lost or damaged book has been made. Overdue notices and bills will be sent home periodically throughout the year.
