School Security Drills in 2010-2011- New legislation will go into effect on November 1, 2010 requiring all New Jersey School Districts to conduct monthly school security drills.  The statute requires each district to conduct drills to address the active shooter, bomb threat, evacuation and lockdown scenarios at least twice each year.  As you know, the Long Hill Township School District has been conducting these types of drills for a number of years.  The goal is to have our students and staff members as well prepared to handle these types of emergencies as they are to handle a fire evacuation.  We are sensitive to our youngest students in conducting these drills and work with them in advance so that these "practice events" do not cause them to be alarmed or frightened.  The district works closely with the Long Hill Police Department and our emergency responders to ensure that our plans to address these potential threats provide the utmost security and safety for our students and staff.  In the past, we have notified parents when these drills would be occurring.  Because the drills will be happening so frequently now, we will no longer notify parents each time one of these drills is scheduled or carried out.

NJASK Score Reports - We received a notification from the New Jersey Department of Education this week indicating that Individual Student Score Reports from the Spring 2010 administration of the NJASK will not be received in districts until September 24th.  We will mail the score reports home to parents when we have received them.

PEPSI REFRESH GRANT for Central School Music Program - Every month Pepsi is giving away up to 1.3 million dollars in grants which range from $5,000 to $250,000.  One thousand applications are accepted for review each month, with those approved being posted on the Pepsi Refresh website for public voting.   Johnathan Birckhead, music teacher at Central Middle School, prepared and submitted a grant request for $25,000 to implement a keyboard laboratory at the school.  The project could be funded through this grant if it becomes one of the top ten vote getters at the $25,000 level.  If awarded, the grant funding would provide for the acquisition of 16 keyboards and the Music in Education Program, which provides innovative, technology based lessons utilizing the keyboards.  Voting on the Long Hill project is only open through September 30th.  We are currently #95 and need to get to the top ten, so vote early and vote often!!  People can vote once a day per email address, you don’t have to be a parent of a Long Hill student, nor do you have to even be a resident of Long Hill Township to vote for this project.  There are two ways to vote for the project:  access the Pepsi Refresh website at www.refresheverything.com/LongHillMusic or they may text 101338 to Pepsi (73774), standard text messaging rates apply.
