School Activities and Information
Interested in running for a seat on the Board of Education? Candidate information and nominating petitions are available on the New Jersey School Boards Association website -
www.njsba.org. Board members will be elected at the general election in November. In order to appear on the ballot, a petition must be submitted to the Morris County Clerk no later than 4:00 p.m. on June 5, 2012.

is a company that recycles empty glue sticks and other products. Long Hill Schools will be collecting glue sticks (any brand), glue bottles (any brand), "scotch" tape dispensers (any brand of tape) and diaper packaging (any brand). Bins to collect these items will be located in the school libraries.

Each Box Top symbol submitted is worth 10 cents. ShopRote also doubles our earning power if you purchase 5 participating box tops products (a list of the products will be supplied monthly through Friday Flyers). You can earn Campbells Labels for Education Points for Millington School just by registering your ShopRite Price Plus Card. Coke Rewards - The school district collects Coke Rewards Codes which we are able to redeem for supplies for the schools. Please send in the bottle caps or code flaps from 12 packs FROM COKE PRODUCTS ONLY - Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, Sprite Zero, Minute Maid Products, Dasani Water, Fresca, Vault, Powerade, Fanta, Barq's, Mr. Pibb and Mello Yello. There are receptacles in each school's Main Office to collect caps.
The Target Card - Another opportunity to earn cash for the Long Hill Township School District! Target stores have a rebate program called "Take Charge for Education." Schools can receive cash back when you use a registered Target Card for your purchases at any Target Store. 2012-2013 Program Registration is open! The Work-Family Connection will be providing Before and After Care at Gillette and Millington Schools. Program hours at Gillette and Millington begin at 7:00 a.m. before school. FORCE SUMMER CAMP at Central School. Participate in several aspects of developing a Play. From designing sets and choreography to building the sets and giving a performance! The camp will be comprised of 3 classes: Music and Drama, Art/Stage Production and Choreographing. Instructors teaching enriching classes are 'Certified' Educators by the State of New Jersey. Exceptional Children/Autism Activities
Watchung Hills Pop Warner Challenger Football and Cheer Program registration is Open! – WHPW is proud to announce the expansion of the football and cheer programs to include those individuals who have special needs. The Challenger Division will be open to children ages 5-16 with disabilities. The Challenger games are shortened, non-competitive games, however, they will be modeled after a typical Pop Warner flag football game with warm-ups, coin toss, National Anthem and cheerleaders for team spirit! WHPW will provide both football and cheer uniforms to their participants as well as a top-notch facility for practice and games. All games will be played on Sundays in between the WHPW football games. Participants may play with a “Buddy” who assists with the ball and navigating the field. The WHPW cheerleaders or a “buddy” may assist cheer participants. WHPW will be seeking out volunteers for coaching positions and assistants for the participants. We encourage parents, teachers and therapists to consider coaching and volunteering. Volunteers must be at least 13 years of age. To register please visit the WHPW website at www.whpw.org. Long Hill Recreation Information
Summer 2012 Field Hockey Clinic sponsored by Long Hill Recreation during July at Riverside Park in Gillette. The clinic will run on 5 consecutive Mondays in July from 2:30pm – 4:30pm beginning July 2nd. Instructors Carly Sinnott and Gail Sinnott will teach the basics of field hockey; and through a series of drills and fun activities, strengthen their skills. The program is open to girls entering grades 5, 6, 7 in the fall 2012. The cost for the clinic is $85. All ability level welcomed. Summer 2012 Girls’ Lacrosse Clinic sponsored by Long Hill Recreation during July and August at Riverside Park in Gillette. Instructors Sarah Goetz (WHRHS Varsity Team Captain 2010) and Esther Goetz will work with the girls to improve their lacrosse skills and increase their understanding of the game. The program will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 10th – Aug. 2nd from 4:30pm – 6:00pm. All ability levels welcomed. The program is open to girls entering grades 5, 6, 7, 8 in the fall, 2012. Stirling Lake: Stirling Lake applications for membership are now being accepted. Applications are posted on the Recreation Bulletin Board and are available online. You may register and pay online by credit card—link available on the recreation page of the town website: www.longhillnj.us. Badges will be distributed starting 4/15. Membership fees remain unchanged from 2011, and the Lake will open Memorial Day weekend. Join our “Learn to Swim” program which will start on Saturdays in June. Once the Lake is open 7 days/week, we will also offer daily swim lessons.
Stirling Lake Open House: Stirling Lake Open House will be held on Monday, May 28th, from 1:30pm- 4:30pm. All Long Hill residents and members of the Lake are invited to come down to Stirling Lake and join us (free of charge) for an afternoon of fun and swimming. During this time we will also be accepting applications for memberships.
Stirling Lake Summer Kick-Off: Back by popular demand, we will host an evening of fun and great music sponsored by Investors Savings Bank of Stirling on Saturday evening, June 23rd. Parrot Beach, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band, is coming back to put us all in the mood for a great summer at the Lake. Pack your coolers and join us on the beach. Open to all Long Hill residents and members of Stirling Lake (free of charge). Beginning June 23nd, Stirling Lake will be open 7 days a week, 11am – 7pm through Labor Day.
Summer Rec Camp: Come spend your summer with us at Rec Camp for 6 weeks. This camp will tentatively run 6/25-8/3/12 (closed July 4th). The camp this year will be open to children entering grades K-8 in the fall 2012. The camp will be held at Millington and Central Schools from 9am-1pm daily. This program is designed to provide for the social, mental and physical growth of the day camper through a variety of activities, special programs and trips in a safe and fun environment. Little Explorers’ Summer Camp: Back again! Children ages 3-5 will participate and enjoy age appropriate activities including stories, games, arts & crafts, songs and movement. Each 4 day camp session (beginning July 9th) will encourage your child’s development through an exciting hands-on theme. Come join the fun! (Each week is limited to 20 campers, so sign up early.) Program Director, Rick Gavornik, a USPTR certified tennis professional with over 25 years of teaching and coaching experience, is running several clinics for Junior players and Adults this spring. Community Events, Activities and Information
Supplies for Soldiers - Girl Scout troop 1061 is collecting supplies to create care packages for soliders. The care packages would consist of travel sized bath products, candy, flavored water mixes, socks, etc. A list of items that can be donated is provided on the flyer. Collection boxes will be available at all three scoools from May 7 through May 18.
Support the Seeing Eye - May's Community Supper at the Stirling Hotel. Come and enjoy the great food and charming atmoshpere after work at The Shirling Hotel on Wednesday, May 16th. A portion of the evening's proceeds will benefit The Seeing Eye. The Stirling Hotel is located at 227 Main Street, Stirling, NJ.
Puppet Show - Long Hill Twp Girl Scout Troop 1753 is hosting a FREE Puppet Show at the Long Hill Twp Library this Sunday, May 20, 2012. The show begins at 2:00pm and features hand-made puppets and orignal stories performed by local 5th grade girls.
4-H Science Adventures - Join the fun at this fantastic hands-on science series. Young scientists will explore climate science in action around the world through indoor and outdoor activities. By calculating their carbon footprint, following water from cloud to river, and analyzing weather trends, participants will be ready to tackle this topical field.
Blossomfest Arts and Crafts and Photography Show - Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 10 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Long Hill Road and Division Avenue in Millington. This event is hosted by the Long Hill Township Chamber of Commerce. There will be a free "hands-on" crafts section for kids. Live music. Lots of delicious fesitval food. 35 Exhibitors of pottery, florals, paintings, sculture, photography, wood carvings, fashion, jewelry, glass and watercolors.
Calling all New Scouts! All boys interested in joining Cub Scouts should attend our Cub Scout Informational/Sign-up meeting on Wednesday, May 30th, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gillette All-Purpose Room. (Please arrive between 6:30 and 7:00 to sign-in). Siblings are welcome and activities will be provided for the children while the parents attend an informational meeting given by our Cubmaster. We will have displays and information from prior Pack Events, Summer Camps, Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold Banquet and our annual Hicks Tract Campout. Wolf Scouts will be present to talk to your children about the great times they have shared as Scouts. Batter's Up Hitting Contest and Soccer Shoot - sponsored by the Stirling Elks on RESCHEDULED TO JUNE 10th at the Little League Fields on Poplar Drive in Stirling. The Share NJ 5K will take place on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at the NJ Sharing Network Headquarters at 691 Central Avenue, New Providence, NJ. Sponsored by the NJ Sharing Network Foundation, an organizationcommitted to supporting the work of NJ Sharing Network and to increasing the number of lives saved through education, research and public awareness about the life-saving benefits of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. All that we do is in honor of those who gave, on behalf of those who received and with hope for the close to 5,000 in New Jersey who continue to wait for the Gift of Life. First Annual Golf Classic to benefit the Tower of Remembrance at the Shrine of St. Joseph in Stirling NJ will be held Friday, May 18th at the Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club. Registration begins at 9:30 and a shotgun start, best ball format, will be at 12 noon. The day of golf will include goodie bags, player gifts, contests, hole-in-one opportunities, as well as lunch, cocktail hour and awards banquet for players and guests. The cost per golfer is $225.00. Dinner only, $75.00. The final deadline for registration is May 4th. All proceeds from this event will be used to support the maintenance of the 9/11 Tower of Remembrance and Shrine Peace Center activities. The Tower of Remembrance, constructed with steel directly from New York’s Twin Towers, honors all who died on 9/11 and has become a public memorial that attracts thousands of visitors each year. At the ceremonies on July 11, 2002, commemorating the Tower of Remembrance, Father Peter Krebs, then the Director of the Shrine St. Joseph, told the survivor families and guests, “The Tower is yours, a place for you to come and reflect, a place to hopefully find peace and healing.” The Peace Center offers students [ages 8-18] a program in developing non-violent approaches to peacemaking and promotes worldwide peace for all, particularly those in conflict. 2012 Male Cancer Screening - Sponsored by the Bernards Township Health Department will be held at Fellowship Village Wellness Center on Wednesday, JUne 27th from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. In-person registration is required at the Bernards Township Health Department, 262 South Finley Avenue, Basking Ridge between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Cost is $30.00 for residents and $40.00 for non residents, with a $5.00 processing fee for cancelled appointments.
Health Department Updates - Long Hill Township has a cooperative agreement with the Bernards Township Health Department to provide Health Department Services for the Township. Long Hill Township School District parents and community residents may wish to sign up to receive the monthly newsletter published by the Bernards Township Board of Health. Subscribing to the newsletter will allow you to keep up-to-date with health issues and will give you information regarding clinics, flu shots, and other health programs. Watchung Hills Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading 2012 Registration is now open. These programs are open to children ages 5-15 living in Warren, Watchung, Long Hill, Bernards Township, Berkeley Heights and New Providence. WHPW is a non-profit organization entering its 38th year. Football/Cheer teams compete for Conference, State and Regional Championships as well as opportunities to advance to Disney World for the Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Championship. Games and practices are held at the WHPW complex located at 101 Old Stirling Road, across from the Warren Middle School). The complex includes a turf game field, sod practice field, locker room, film room and a new Strength and Conditioning Center complete with Personalized Group Training. Junior Red Devils Flag Football Club - Registration for the 2012 fall season will take place Wednesday, May 23 and Friday, June 1 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Basking Ridge Community Center. The club offers 7 on 7 non-contact flag football for boys and girls in grades 3 through 12. Games are played on Monday and Wednesday evenings on the Ridge High turf field from September 10th through November 14th. See the flyer for additional information or to register online.
Ridge Mavericks Travel Soccer Tryouts - Register online at www.ridgemavericks.com and check the flyer for details and specific dates for tryouts for various age level teams. Registration fee for tryouts is $15.00 and includes both tryout dates. Tryouts are held at Mount Park and Harry Dunham Park in Basking Ridge. Learning Express Library provides interactive skill-building courses in math, reading, and writing as well as a broad range of practice tests based on official exams. This innovative platform includes self-paced study, instant scoring, and diagnostic feedback and can be accessed from any computer that has an Internet connection. LUMOS provides onlie lessons and practice tests to help improve student achievement on the NJASK tests. LUMOS online is designed in alignment with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJ CCCS) and the NJASK test for grades 3 through 8. eBooks - You want 'em? We got 'em!
eBooks are all the rage these days, and Long Hill Library has a growing collection of eBooks available for checkout through ListenNJNW.com (where you can also find downloadable audiobooks for your MP3 player). Instructions for downloading are available on the library's web page. The library's collection of eBooks for loan is compatible with the Barnes & Noble Nook, the Kobo eReader and most Sony eBook readers (not the Kindle or the iPad, due to copyright issues). Even if you don't have an eBook reader, you can download and read books on your laptop!

Summer Camp Information
Watchung Hills Sending District Summer Band 2012 - This summer enrichment course is open to new musicians and current band students in grades 4 through 12 who wish to continue and preserve their instrumental skills. The program runs two, three and four weeks. A 45 minute lesson and band rehearsal will be scheduled for all intermediate, advanced and high school students. Each beginner band member will attend a half hour lesson and theory class. Lessons and bands will meet every day, Monday through Friday (with the exception of July 4th). The program will run from June 25, 2012 through July 19, 2012 at Central Middle School, 90 Central Avenue, Stirling.
The Lisbona Soccer Academy and the Lisbona All Sports Camp will be offered at Millington School this summer. This camp is open to boys and girls entering 1st through 9th grade in September 2012. Beginners are welcome. Tentative starting dates: June 25th for the Lisbona Soccer Academy and July 16th for the Lisbona All Aports Camp. The Blue Duck Art Studio will once again be holding summer art camps at Millington School. The camps offered are: Wild Wild West! and Printmaking from July 9th through July 13th and Celebrate Good Times! and Paper Mache Scultures from July 16th through July 20th. Work Family Connection Summer Camp 2012 - The Work Family Connection will offer a summer camp at the Lafayette Avenue School in Chatham from June 25th through August 24th. Warren Township Schools Summer Fun Program - The Warren Township School District offers children attending kindergarten through eighth grade opportunities for enrichment activities and extended/after care services in our Summer Fun 2012 Program. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center Kids' Critter Camp 2012 - A week-long day camp held at the Madison chelter for children in grades 2 through 6 who love and want to learn about animals. Children's Summer Art Camp 2012 - presented by the Watchung Arts Center. This is a three-week program during the month of July for children ages 6-12. The camp focuses on Creativity, Imagination and Ingenuity. There are three cycles: July 9-13, July 16-20 and July 23-27. Child Find Information - The Long Hill Township School District annually seeks to identify children, residing in Long Hill Township, from the ages of 3 through 21, who may be at risk for learning disabilities. Children in this age group who exhibit developmental delays in language, cognition, physical and/or emotional development, may be eligible for services from the public schools as a preschool disabled youngster. If your child is determined to be potentially eligible for services, the local public school district will evaluate your child. Should the evaluation show that he/she has a potentially disabling condition, services will be provided to your child by the public schools of Long Hill Township. For those children who are determined to be eligible, services begin on their third birthday. Parents school contact the school district, if they have concerns, when their child is 2 years and six months old. If you suspect that your child has a disabling condition or you would like further information, please call the Office of Special Services at (908) 647-1202 ext. 2231. All public schools in the State of New Jersey are required to provide these services. If you live outside of Long Hill Township, please contact your local public school district.
The Somerset Hills Child Health Conference is run in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Vaccines for Children Program in order that all children who are not covered by health insurance receive appropriate vaccinations in a timely manner at no cost. The goal is to eliminate vaccine-preventable disease in children. Introduced in 1994 by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the NJ VFC is a federally funded, state operated vaccine supply program that provides pediatric vaccines at no cost to doctors and health care providers who serve children who might not otherwise be vaccinated due to the inability to pay. The Somerset Hills Child Health Conference is conducted by the Bernards Township Health Department and the local Boards of Health in conjunction with the Visiting Nurses Association of Somerset Hills and is held the second Tuesday of each month with the exception of July when it is held on the third Tuesday. The clinic is held from 8:45 am to 11:45 am at St. James RC Church at 184 South Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge, NJ. Clinic Dates for 2012 are: May 8, June 12, July 17, August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13, and December 11, 2012. This program cares for children who are without health insurance from birth to 18 years old living in Bernards Township, Bernardsville, Chester Borough, Mendham Borough, Mendham Township, Peapack and Gladstone Borough & Long Hill Township. Keeping Our Kids Safe, Healthy and In School Website - This website has recently been updated by the New Jersey Department of Education to include six major areas: Student Health, Student Behavior, Safe and Positive Learning Environment, Afterschool Programs, Social Services and Other Educational Services. This website provides valuable information and resources for parents, teachers, administrators and the general public about programs and services that support positive development of K-12 students. The site includes information in the areas of student conduct, school safety, behavior and health problems, child abuse and neglect, school health services and student health, and other topics of interest.

If you checked a box on your NJ tax return indicating that you have a child without health insurance, you will be receiving in the mail an envelope marked "Express Lane Application for Health Insurance." NJ FamilyCare is committed to covering uninsured children and protecting families' privacy. Parents can also contact the Association for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ) or njfamilycare@acnj.org for help in completing NJ FamilyCare applications.
